Maradon hoped the forest would be enough to incapacitate Thiery’s damn foot soldiers but, even if it didn’t, he knew the extra men in his sword ranks gave him the greater strength. He didn’t doubt Erimar’s boast that more Thiery forces were on the way, but he would never tuck tail and run while he held the advantage.

If he accomplished nothing else, he must take this opportunity to avenge Baes. He’d had seen the big, long-haired soldier at the front of Thiery’s ranks. Lacedar may not get Bern today, but Thiery would bleed before he left this land.

He’d pointed out the big soldier with the wolf’s head helm to his key men, as well as making sure they recognized Erimar’s son and the one he guessed to be his grandson, from age, description and his position between Erimar and Tirren in the lines. If that old ass, Erimar, or his son, Tirren, found out what it felt like to lose a son, then today would be sweeter still, but if he only got one, he wanted the wolf.

He wondered again how Thiery’s army had appeared here to thwart him. The only explanation he could see was that the big, son-of-a-whore soldier must have broken the covenant of the regions and crossed the border to spy on them, and then sent word to the Hold.

Maradon threaded his way to the highest ground available, his personal guard following. He knew he’d have to retreat soon, to save the strength of his army for another day, but he’d sacrifice as many men as it took to achieve at least one of his objectives.
